In an attempt to be inclusive
as well as environmentally
conscious, a few labels use
Braille as part of recycled
packaging. Braille is
a tactile writing system
used by the visually impaired,
and this milestone makes
cosmetics more accessible to
them. With this new approach
to packaging, brands were able
to expand their reach to visually
impaired consumers. Almost
70 per cent of L'Occitane
products feature Braille on their
packaging. Herbal Essences,
a popular name in the organic
haircare sector, also recently
introduced this concept to
their lines.
Derived from renewable
sources like vegetable fats,
oils, starch, and fruits,
bioplastics help curb the
issue of plastic pollution
that plagues the planet.
In fact, with its utilisation,
carbon neutrality is not
out of reach. Vegan and
cruelty-free brand, Aveda,
uses bioplastics derived
from sugarcane to package
their products. The brand
has also committed
to water stewardship,
wherein it uses water in
ways that are socially
equitable, environmentally
sustainable, and
economically beneficial.
The practice of removing
as much carbon dioxide
from the atmosphere as
that emitted during the
manufacturing process
of cosmetic products and
their packaging gained
much prominence this year.
Davines, an Italian haircare
brand, produces energy
from renewable sources, and
uses plastic derived from
sugarcane to pack products.
This allows for reduced levels
of carbon emissions and
the cultivation of sugarcane
also helps absorb significant
amounts of CO 2 from the
environment.

seed paper can be upcycled by
planting it. When the paper
is sowed in soil and watered
regularly, the seeds sprout into
flowers, herbs, or vegetables, and
the paper composts away. This
pro-green practice encourages
people to plant more trees, which
is an essential step in promoting
a greener Earth. Innisfree,
a nature-oriented South Korean
cosmetics brand, offers seed paper
bags instead of regular paper or
cloth carry bags during checkout.
Plant-based line, Pangea
Organics, has also integrated
plantable packaging which
resonates with their identity.
Their box packaging contains
basil or amaranth seeds.
