The Highwomen
The Highwomen
After noticing the few female artists
represented on country radio, Amanda
Shires got in touch with Brandi Carlile, Maren
Morris and Natalie Hemby, leading them
to form a new country music supergroup.
The band’s name pays homage to the
Highwaymen country supergroup that was
active in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
FIVE FACTS:
- Hemby was a late addition to the line-up;
her spot was originally intended to be left
for guest collaborators, with Sheryl Crow,
Janelle Monáe and Margo Price considered
as potential guests. - Hemby’s membership was not publicly
confirmed until the group’s debut live
performance, which was at Nashville’s
Bridgestone Arena on April 1, 2019. - The band has covered the Fleetwood Mac
song “The Chain” for crime film The Kitchen,
which saw its U.S. theatrical release on
August 9, 2019. - The Highwomen’s self-titled debut album
was released on September 6, 2019, by
which time three singles from the album
had already been released. - The album has been received mostly
positively by critics, Variety’s Chris Willman
declaring it an “instant classic”.
