Aladdin
In the Arabian city of Agrabah, street urchin
Aladdin (Mena Massoud) longs to win the
heart of beautiful Princess Jasmine (Naomi
Scott), the daughter of the Sultan (Navid
Negahban). After coming across a magic
lamp and summoning a genie (Will Smith),
he asks for his help – but the shadowy Grand
Vizier, Jafar (Marwan Kenzari), is on their tail.
FIVE FACTS:
- Guy Ritchie opted to direct this live-action
retelling of the 1992 animated original
primarily because his films “are really about
street hustlers” and “Aladdin is a classic street
hustler who makes good.” - Will Smith’s Genie is based on several of
the actor’s ‘90s roles, including the Fresh
Prince of Bel-Air of the eponymous TV series
and Agent J of Men in Black fame. - Originally, Jim Carrey had been favored
to play the Genie, but a much-publicized
lawsuit at the time prevented the actor from
committing to any long-term work. - In his blue, shirtless guise, the Genie has a
highly sculpted physique created with CGI. - Jasmine’s handmaiden, Dalia (Nasim
Pedrad), is the only main character to
have been created specifically for this
film; she does not appear in the 1992
animated version.
