For outdoor adventures in Montenegro, head
inland to uncover some of Europe’s most pristine
mountains and enamouring national parks.

In Eastern European cities, seek out the
self-service canteens, where food quality is
surprisingly high for the price you’ll pay. Local dishes
reign supreme – without tourist-inlated price tags.

One of the essential things I carry when hiking
or camping is a small roll of electrical tape –
ideal for temporarily ixing broken shoes or tent poles.

To see the Canadian
Rockies from a whole
new perspective, embark on

SEEKING SOLITUDE AND
SCENERY IN CUMBRIA
Q
I’m heading to the Lake
District mid-October to do
some moderate level walks.
Where should I go for a good
balance of solitude and scenery?
Kristian Hayes, London
A
Threlkeld is a top-notch
walking base. The village has
two pubs, a café, a ine hotel – and
the grand backdrop of Blencathra,
which o ers a fabulous skyline
traverse along the fabulous scarp
overbearing Threlkeld to the north.
Ascend by Blease Fell and descend
by Doddick Fell for the easiest
paths and grandest scenery. More
competent walkers will relish Hall’s
Fell, the upper section is a rocky-
laddered arête direct to the summit.
For a second day, pass up by the
Blencathra Centre following the
track leading up the Glenderaterra
valley to briely join the Cumbria
Way, before stepping o onto the
Burnt Horse ridge and climb the
amazing peak of Lonscale Fell.
Keep to the high ground to claim
Skiddaw Little Man and Skiddaw
itself, a genuine 931m mountain.

and, on a lovely wooded headland,
the Villa del Balbianello (where
Casino Royale was shot), which you
can walk to from the pretty village
of Lenno. There are regular ferry
boat services.
Further south at Cernobbio is the
lavish Art Nouveau Villa Bernasconi,
built by a textiles magnate: no
coincidence because Como town
has long been famous for its silk. It
has brilliant examples of 1930s
architecture by Giuseppe Terragni.
There are also good restaurants
- try Il Solito Posto or the Ristorante
Sociale. A popular dish is lavarello,
a delicate-lavoured freshwater
ish, or pasta sauce made with
missoltini, somewhat similar to
sardines. Drink deliciously fresh
Lugana, a white wine from the
shores of Lake Garda; or the rustic
Valtellina reds, from the steep
alpine valley that runs east from
the top of Lake Como.
