T

he British Council estimates that “English is
spoken at a useful level by some 1.75 billion
people worldwide”. When I saw this figure
in our feature “The state of English today”
(pp. 14–19), I went back and read the sentence again.
When had English gone from millions of speakers to
well over a billion? It made me aware of just how many
influences the language of Shakespeare is subject to, and
to ask myself what the consequences for English are.
You’ll find some of the answers in our feature. By the way,
the gentle man on the cover may or may not be William
Shakespeare. There are not many pictures of our most
famous writer that are known to be genuine. We chose
this one, called “the Cobb portrait”, because, well, William
looks rather handsome, especially in his sunglasses.
Between the pages of this issue of Spotlight, you will find
a new learning tool: a vocabulary trainer on the topic of
telephoning and e-mails. This trainer — the first of seven
— is designed for easy and effective learning. Here are
some ideas for making the most of it.
You can read the English words and phrases on the left,
keeping the German list covered. Just how many words
do you know? Keep testing yourself, and perhaps mark
those expressions in pencil that you already do know.
If you find a word difficult to learn, mark it with an “x”
as a reminder to practise it. The highlighted expressions
are in the dialogues on the right and overleaf. Reading in
context may help you to remember the words. And don’t
forget the “Find out more” section. It gives you useful tips
on this area of vocabulary. Happy learning!
