Tips
⋅ If you feel dispirited about returning to work after a nice
weekend, you are suffering from Monday blues. The
term blue Monday describes a Monday on which you feel
gloomy because of the long working week ahead of you.
⋅ In American English, a Monday morning quarterback is
someone who criticizes an event after it has happened, but
who wouldn’t have managed it better him- or herself.
⋅ People talk about having “that Friday feeling” when they
are happy about something that is about to change, such as
not having to work at the weekend.
⋅ Nowadays, the term Black Friday is well known from sales
in shops and online stores. It refers to the day after the
American Thanksgiving holiday (which is always the fourth
Thursday in November). Black Friday is seen as the start of
the Christmas shopping season.
⋅ The weekday rush hour is a time when the roads are
crowded with people driving to and from work.
⋅ If you don’t have anything fun to do on a Saturday evening
but would love to go out, you suffer from Saturday night
fever. The term comes from the 1977 film of the same name,
starring John Travolta as a champion disco dancer.
⋅ Many people spend their Sundays reading a Sunday paper^
— an edition of a newspaper sold only on Sundays, often
longer than usual and including several different sections.
There are also weekend editions of news programmes,
which are more detailed than those during the week.
⋅ A Sunday lunch or Sunday dinner usually consists of roast^
meat (a Sunday roast), potatoes and vegetables. It is bigger
than other meals eaten during the week because most
people have more time to cook on Sundays.
⋅ The term Sunday driver describes someone who drives
very slowly and anxiously because he or she is not used to
driving, and who typically drives only on Sundays to visit
people or go on short outings.
⋅ You can refer to your best clothes, worn on special
occasions, as your Sunday best; for example, “We wore our
Sunday best to Peter’s birthday party.”
⋅ If two people secretly go away to spend time together, they
are said to be having a dirty weekend.
⋅ The term weekend warrior refers to people who often have
jobs in which they are not very active, but who spend their
weekends doing extreme sports.
⋅ A father who spends time with his children only on Satur-
days and Sundays is sometimes disapprovingly called a
weekend dad or weekend father.
