NEWYORK — RafaelNa-
dal found himself trailing ina
tight first set against a bigger,
younger op-
ponent who
was finding
ways to cause trouble in their
US Open semifinal.
Never one to panic, never
liable to have a letdown,Nadal
hung toughFriday night, wait-
ed for 24th-seededMatteo
Berrettini to wiltever so slight-
ly.
Nadal moved closer to a
fourth US Open championship
and 19th Grand Slam title
overall — oneaway from Rog-
er Federer’s record for men—
by pullingaway for a 7-6 (8-6),
6-4, 6-1 victory over Berrettini
under the roofat ArthurAshe
Stadium.
The second-seededNadal
was down, 4-0, then 5-2, then
6-4 in the openingtiebreaker
beforetaking the next four
points and was on hisway.
‘‘You don’t want to be in a
tiebreak ag ainst a playerlike
Matteo... I was a little bit
lucky, no?’’ Nadal said. ‘‘I sur-
vivedatthatmomentand...
after that, the match com-
pletelychanged.’’
Nadal broke once in the
secondsetandthreetimesin
the thi rd, while never facinga
single break point in the
match.
The 33-year-old Spaniard
will faceNo. 5 seed Daniil
Medvedev ofRussia on Sun-
day.
It is Medvedev’s first major
final, Nadal’s 27th. They've
played oncebefore, the final of
the MontrealMasters hard-
court tournament in August,
and Nadal won, 6-3, 6-0.
‘‘He’s one of the more solid
players on tour,’’ Nadal said.
‘‘He is makingsteps forward
every single week.’’
Medvedev advanced earlier
in the day by beating Grigor
Dimitrov, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, 6-3.
The 23-year-oldRussian
first made a name forhimself
at the US Open by earningthe
wrath of spectators. During
his on-court interview, Medve-
dev referenced his ‘‘tourna-
ment of controversies,’’ which
included accumulating
$19,000 in fines and antago-
nizing booing fans last week,
sayinghe k new itwas ‘‘not go-
ing to be easy with the public.’’
Medvedev’s tennis was abit
scratchy, and likeNadal, he
barelyavoided droppingthe
opening set. But he did just
enoughwith his mostly defen-
sive style toget past Dimitrov,
who had eliminatedFedere r in
a five-set quarterfinal.

NEWYORK —Getting to
Grand Slam finals has not
been the hard part
for Serena Wil-
liams since re-
turning to tennis
after having aba-
by. It’s what comes
next that’s been
the problem.
Despite repeat-
ed injuries, despite a lack of
proper preparation, Williams
keeps putting herself in posi-
tion to earn a 24th major
championship, which would
equalMargaret Court for the
most in history. Williamsgets
her latest chanceat the US
Open on Saturday afternoon,
when she will face 19-year-old
Bianca Andreescu ofCanada
for the trophy.
It might help that shegot a
look, if a brief one,at And-
reescu just last month in the fi-
nal of a tuneupevent inToron-
to. Williams was trailing 3-1
when she retired from the
match, citing back spasms.
Andrees-
cu has been
a revelation
this season,
going 33-4,
including
7-0 against
top-10oppo-
nents, and
hasn’t lost acompleted match
sinceMarch 1. She was side-
lined by injuries for part of
that time,particularly to her
rightshoulder.
She has avaried style, an
in-your-faceattitude — her
coach, Sylvain Bruneau, called
her a ‘‘street fighter’’ — and an
ability to come through in the
clutch,going 13-3 in three-set-
ters this year.
Just one yearago, Andrees-
cu was losing inqualifying in
New York. Now she is the first
womansince Williams’solder
sister, Venus, in 1997 toget all
the way to the final in herUS
Open main-draw debut.
‘‘I remember always telling
my team I would have always
wanted to play her right before
she retires,’’ said Andreescu,
who was born the year after
Williams won her first Grand
Slam titleat FlushingMead-
ows at age 17.‘‘I’m really look-
ing forward to it.’’
This will be Williams’s
fourth final inthe pa st six ma-
jors. But she is 0-3 in those
others, losing against Angel-
ique Kerber at Wimbledon in
July 2018, toNaomi Osakaat
FlushingMeadows in 2018,
and to SimonaHalep thisJuly.
‘‘There’s so many different
emotions in finals,’’ Williams
said after her 6-3, 6-1 semifi-
nal victory overNo. 5 Elina
Svitolina. ‘‘It just brings out so
many hi ghs and lows, nerves
and expectations.It’s a lot.’’
