ting performance goals. Keep in mind that perform-
ance goals are toolsto improve and manage per-
formance. Like any tool, they do no good if they’re left in the
back of the drawer to gather dust. You can buy a hammer, but
unless you know how to use it and then you use it effectively,
it’s not going to be of much good.
The last chapter ended with 10 hints important for setting
and using performance goals. In this chapter we’re going to pro-
vide you with essential tips and guidelines to make sure you get
maximum benefit from the goals you set with your employees.

Using the Goals During the Year


Setting goals is only the first step in maximizing performance.
You need to use those goals during the year as tools to manage
and improve performance. Here are some important tips and
guidelines.
1.Ensure that there is adequate communication about perform-
ance goals between you and each employee during the year.
Performance goals aren’t “fire and forget” tools. They bring
