I was working as a flight attendant, and right before a
trip, the guy I was dating broke up with me—with no
explanation. I was devastated, but I had to go to work.
Luckily, I was flying with my roommate. On our final
layover, as I was sobbing in disbelief, she surprised me
with an ice cream sundae. I couldn’t help but smile.
BREECE WILSON
Elmont, New York
On a lunch break
at work I asked a
group of friends,
“Who wants to go
halfway around
the world with me
this summer so I
can visit my son?”
Without
hesitating, Stacey
said, “Sure!”
Two months later,
we landed in
the Philippines.

When I left California to take care of my mother in New York,
my friend Ellen and I set up a daily phone call. She took an
afternoon break from her job just so I’d have someone to talk
with every day about this challenge. It was such a gift!
JUDY TATELBAUM
Carmel, California
My friend was unable to
attend the 70th birthday
party my husband threw
for me, so she put together
photos with a narrative
of our life, childhood
through present day. It
brought back so many
wonderful memories of the
years we’ve spent together.

When I started working and got my f irst
apartment, I didn’t have much money.
One particularly bad year I was so strapped
for cash that I had to forgo buying a
Christmas tree. On Christmas Eve, I heard a
knock at my door, and there stood my
girlfriend with a small tree. It’s still the
Christmas I always remember.
MARIA RIES
Santa Monica
Cut my grass! We have
a crummy mower and
a huge yard. While my
husband’s been away
for federal officer
training, our friends have
recognized that it’s
sometimes hard for me to
take care of everything
alone. One night while I
was at work, they sneaked
over and—sur prise!
CAROLINE TASHJIAN
Lexington, Kentucky
My friend Tara asked me
to be her daughter’s
godmother, and I gladly
accepted! It has been
one of the greatest joys and
biggest blessings of my life.
