Veni, Vidi, Venice
The 76th Venice Film Festival kicked
into high gear Aug. 29 with premieres
of Brad Pitt’s (3) Ad Astra as well as
Scarlett Johansson (2) and Adam
Driver’s (4) Marriage Story. “There’s
so much of all of us in this film,”
Johansson told THR of making the
divorce drama with helmer Noah
Baumbach. “It was an experience to
share with him and have him share
with me.” That evening, Prada and
Warner Bros. threw a fete for Pedro
Almodóvar (1), where Joaquin
Phoenix — there for Joker’s Aug. 31
debut — spent the evening with
paramour Rooney Mara. And Italian
teens lined up for Kristen Stewart (6)
ahead of the Aug. 30 premiere of
Seberg. “I’m now totally unguarded,”
Stewart told THR of her new willing-
ness to step into the spotlight. “It’s a
beautiful feeling.” — ARISTON ANDERSON

Wine and Dynasty
Rupert Murdoch’s (14) casual BBQ
in honor of the 30th anniversary of
his Moraga Vineyards turned into a
mogul mini-summit. Son (and Fox
Corp. CEO) Lachlan Murdoch (12)
was joined by Disney’s Bob Iger and
Peter Rice (12), NBCUniversal’s Ron
Meyer and Jeff Shell, L.A. Times
owner Patrick Soon-Shiong, Fox
Searchlight’s Steve Gilula and more.
Rupert’s wife, Jerry Hall (14), min-
gled with her ex Mick Jagger (14) as
guests enjoyed free-flowing wine and
a whole-hog BBQ. Said Rupert, who
has lived on the property since 2013,
in a pre-lunch speech: “The passion
with which the winemakers and
staff approach each vintage is truly
unique.” — MATTHEW BELLONI

It Happens
Filmmaker Andy Muschietti (16)
debuted his sequel to last sum-
mer’s $700 million horror hit with
a carnival-themed premiere, which
coincided with his 46th birthday.
His cast doled out compliments
as he rode a prop bicycle down
the Regency Village Theatre black
carpet and Jessica Chastain (15)
led the audience in singing happy
birthday. — CHRIS GARDNER

Power of Music
While the MTV VMAs offered many
memorable moments — including
a Sopranos reunion and a hip-hop
tribute to the Garden State — it was
Tay l o r S w i f t (11) and Missy Elliott (8)
who stole the spotlight. Swift, who
opened the show and won video of
the year, was praised for bringing
attention to the LGBTQ community
and called out the current adminis-
tration from the Prudential Center
stage, while Video Vanguard Award
recipient Elliott shook the house with
a medley of her hits. — EVAN REAL
