WELCOMEPAGE
ISSUE 381|COMPUTERSHOPPER|NOVEMBER 2019 3
T
he RoyalSociety of Chemistry has been doing some
digging (pardon the pun) intothe rare elements
mined from the depths of the Earth in order to
manufacture our favouritetechnology products. And what
it has found is alarming: natural resources of rare-earth
elements such as indium, yttrium and tantalum –all crucial
in making our mobile phones, tablets and computers –are
set to run out within the next 100 years.
More worrying, the research reveals that most of us
leave old kit dotted around our homes, unwanted and
unused. The Society is calling forbetter recycling facilities
to ensure that these rare elements can be reused, rather
than gather dust in abottom drawer.
If you want to do your bit forthe environment by
reusing rather than buying new –all while improving
your computing experience forlittle or no cash
investment –our ‘Speed up your PC’ guide is the perfect
place to start (page 98).
Once you’ve rid your PC of peskyPUPsorannoying
adware and have it running like new,it’s worth taking alook
at our monitors group test (page 70). We’ve put eight
displays through their paces, and with prices starting from
just £136, it’s agreat time to consider upgrading your
screen so it’s worthy of your revitalised computer.
Forthose looking forextra projects to get stuck into
as the nights start to draw in, we’ve got aguide to IFTTT
(page 124), with some great ideas on how to make your
lifeeven smarter.
And if you’re one of the many worried about the data
privacy breaches that continue to hit the headlines, we’ve
got amasterclass in managing your data. Turn to page 108
to make sure you retain what’s important, recover anything
lost, and destroyany data you don’t want revealed.MadelineBennett,Editor
