Ages 2–13 Term fees Day:
£6,790; boarding: £8,525
Community is at the core of this
thriving co-educational prep in
rural Worcestershire. Charismatic
Head William Lockett says that
‘engaging in the children’s lives is
at the heart of the school’, and he’s
clearly succeeding: ‘he values your
opinion,’ illuminates one young
source. In its magnificent grounds,
the school boasts a fleet of courts,
pitches and a swimming pool. In-
doors, a 1:1 personal tutor policy
for the older years helps to ensure
that every child flourishes here.
One particular calendar highlight
is the visit to Abberley’s own chalet
in the small village of Hauteville
Gondon in France’s Savoie region,
for whitewater rafting and French
lessons – they shrewdly tell the
pupils that the teachers there
ne parlent pas Anglais.

Head Christian Pritchard Pupils
450 day and boarding: 225 boys,
225 girls Faith C of E Ages 2–13
Term fees Day: £5,797;
flexi-boarding: £37 per night
New Head Christian Pritchard
embodies the Beachborough ethos

with his fun-filled enthusiasm.
He’s rightly proud of this small
non-selective school, producing
‘world-ready learners’, and value
added can hardly be doubted
when, last year, 92 per cent of leav-
ers left with a scholarship under
their belt. The new TED (technolo-
gy, engineering and design) centre
is a work of art and will no doubt
be a catalyst for yet more exciting
achievements. The school is set in a

17th-century manor house in
32 acres of grounds, and children
can be seen exploring in their hardy
blue boiler suits. These guys have a
great track record at the National
Triathlon Championships, and the
equestrian team has enjoyed much
recent success. Pupils relish board-
ing at this ‘second home’ and
they rave about the food – Mars
Bar ‘Mouse’ and ‘Birdseed’ with
custard are current favourites.
