Blood test to flag concussion

biomarkers focused on detecting brain
lesions but subconcussive injuries do not
necessarily result in them.
Lead author Dr Linda Papa, of Orlando
Health, said the blood test could be useful
for athletes or medics at the scene of a car
crash, adding: “The technology is only a
year or two away.”

A BLOOD test to detect concussion could
be in use within two years.
The test looks for proteins called GFAP
and UCH-L1 that are found in our brains
and released into blood after an injury.
Higher levels could indicate a concussion
or a subconcussive injury – which often
show no immediate symptoms but cause
wear and tear on the brain with repeated
