Government neglect has “directly
contributed” to an “alarming rise”
in violence and drugs at one of the
country’s busiest jails, it is claimed.
The Independent Monitoring
Board (IMB) at HMP Pentonville
has called on the justice secretary,
Robert Buckland , and prisons
minister, Lucy Frazer , to fund
improvements “as a matter of
urgency”. It asked the ministers to
visit the prison so they could see the

ChuckleVision voted
best ever CBBC series
ChuckleVision has been named
the greatest CBBC series of all time
in a poll of TV viewers, after the
show was snubbed by the children’s
television channel it aired on.
The slapstick children’s show
introduced the world to Paul
and Barry Chuckle and their
catchphrase , “To me, to you”. Over
two decades , the brothers took on
myriad jobs and adventures, until
the show ended in 2009. Barry
Chuckle, whose real name was Barry
Elliott, died at the age of 73 last
August.

Trend for cremations
without any mourners
Just one in 10 people wants a
traditional funeral, according
to a new report, which also says
that “ direct cremations” , where
no mourners are present, are
increasingly popular.
The UK’s largest funeral director,
Co-op Funeralcare , says its study is
based on feedback from more than
500,000 funerals in the last fi ve
years and the views of 4,000 British
adults, and refl ects changing trends
and attitudes towards death.
One in 25 funerals arranged by
the Co-op is a direct cremation – a
cheaper and more basic option ,
which costs £1,395 in England. On
average a typical Co-op funeral costs
£3,987 for a full service that includes
cremation and burial fees.

Clarke, warned that violence fuelled
by gangs, drugs, debt and “volatile
young prisoners” ha d “increased
markedly” at the north London
jail. In the past six months there
have been 264 assaults on staff and
inmates , compared with 196 during
a previous inspection, according to
Clarke’s report. The IMB called for
equipment to tackle drugs and carry
out searches, saying the Victorian
prison’s age made it impossible to
install a full body scanner.
Pentonville’s four wings – largely
unchanged since it was built in 1842
- now hold up to 1,310 adult men,
with nearly 10% being under 21.
The Ministry of Justice said it
would respond to the IMB in writing.

actually you didn’t in my opinion.
