START on left with number given and follow instructions as you go across. In 30 seconds, beginners have to
complete their own challenge; intermediates have to complete their own challenge and the beginner’s;
advanced players have to complete their own challenge and the intermediate’s. SOLUTION BELOW

(a) ♠ Q 8 ♥ K 10 7 6 ♦ Q 6 5 ♣ 9 8 4 3
(b) ♠ Q J ♥ K J 9 4 ♦ K J 3 ♣ 10 8 7 5
(c) ♠ K Q 8 6 5 ♥ 7 4 2 ♦ 3 2 ♣ A 9 4
(d) ♠ K Q 8 5 ♥ 7 4 2 ♦ A 10 6 4 ♣ A 6
(e) ♠ 9 4 ♥ Q J 10 7 6 3 ♦ 8 2 ♣ K J 4

LHO opens 1♥, and partner doubles. What
action would you take on each of these hands,
after next hand passes?
You will get the right answers easily if you have
understood the guidelines.
Hands (a) and (b) are balanced with stoppers in
the opponent’s suit, so you bid 1NT on (a) and 2NT
on the stronger (b). Bid 3♠ on (c), which is highly
invitational — just a bit better than 2♠ would be.
Hand (d) is an opening hand, so you certainly
intend to be in game; start with the forcing cue bid
of 2♥ and wait to hear more about partner’s hand.
Hand (e) is the one exception to which I referred
on Monday; you may pass, thus converting partner’s
take-out double to a penalty double.
Note how long and solid the trump suit needs to
be in order to pass, especially as you are sitting
under declarer.
Partner is expected to start by leading a trump
if he has one. You may as well hope to take a
penalty on this hand, because the prospect of
playing in another contract, including 1NT, looks
pretty gloomy.
