MK.2Fs AND SOME MEASUREMENTS
Measuring Intercity lining: the
white stripe is 100mm deep.
The redstripe is deeper than the
white at 180mm.Furthermore,
the measurement from the
top of the white stripe to the
windowglazin gis170mm.
MEASURING upvarious ‘OO’gaugeMk.2
air-conditioned coaches shows some subtle
differences betweenvarious manufacturers'
interpretations of some importantfeatur es.
Twowerechecked after measuring up the
newHornbyMk.2f coaches: the first being the
redand white striping which is so characteristic
of Intercity Executivelivery in both BR and
Swallowformats.
On the prototype, the white line is narrower
than theredand to confirm theexact width,
measurementswere taken fromafull sizecoach
at Eastleigh. The white band is 100mm deep
(1.3mm in 4mmscale) whilst theredone is
180mm deep (2.4mm in 4mmscale).
The newHornbyMk.2f coach had the correct
width white stripe. Theredone, being justatad
wider, iss till too narrow at 1.6mm.
In comparison, Bachman’s model is correct
with a1.3mm white stripe and 2.4mmredstripe.
An older lima modelwasfound to have stripes at
1.3mm and 2.4mmrespectively.
Passenger saloon windowglazing areawas
the second detailtobechecked. Measurements
taken from Mk.2d BSO No. 9488 on
September 11, 2002revealed them to be 60in
by 25.5in. The Mk.2 air-con coach models all
have the same 20mm length, butvary slightly
in depth.
The windowopenings between the frames in
Horn by’s ne wMk.2f coachwindows are8.5mm
deep and Bachmann’s are8.6mm deep.For
comparison, the Airfix/Dapol Mk.2d and Lima
Mk.2f models have windows 9mm deep between
the windowframes.
The actual glazing opening on the Airfix/
Dapol model is 8.2mm. Inrealit y, there’s little
in it forthe twonew Mk.2f models and both sit
comfortablytogether in terms of buffer height,
alignment of windows and therain gutter.
