Meanwhile, No. 73961 spent half of
the month underrepair at Eastleighas
did No. 73963 at Brush,Loughborough

VETERAN No. 86259LesRoss/PeterPan
undertook charterwork overboth the
West andEast Coastmainlines during
July, starting out on July13with the
1Z86/07.10 Euston-Carlisle, which it
hauled toCarnforthprior to handing
overtos team motivepowerint he
shape of ‘Jubilee’ No. 45690Leander.
Later,the AC electricranlight to Preston
to collect thereturn service, whichwas
then heavily delayedwhile police tried
to apprehendatrespasser nearLeyland.
On July20, No. 86259 took the
1Z50/08.16King’s Cross-Carlisle asfar
as Doncaster,where PacificNo. 60163
Tornadowaswaiting to ta ke the
trainforward. Afterwards,No. 86259
ranlight to Newcastle and hauled
the lastleg of the tour (1Z54/19.22
Newcastle-King’s Cross) back to
London,reach ed nineminute searly.

THE ActonGrangeJunctionblockade
resultedin Class 88 locomotives being
regularlyseenbetween Golborne
Junction, Eccles andWilmslowas
container trainsbetween Daventry and
Mossendwere diverted thatway for
twoweeksstarting on July20. Pioneer
No. 88001was oftenrecorded with
the 4S44/12.13Daventry-Mossend
during thefirstweek of diversions,
with No.88004takin goveronJuly27.

The 6D43/07.31Crewe CLS-Valley
flask train andits afternoonreturn saw
pair sofClass88s at the helm on half a
dozenoccasionduring July, with

WillesdenPRDC-Shieldmuir didnot call
at Warringtonand,havingtraversed
ChatMoss, took the curve from
ParksideEast Ju nctionto Golborne
Junction toreachthe West Coast
Main Line. Untilthe end of July, the two
serviceswere alte rnatelypoweredby
Nos. 90018 and 90019.
The Caledo nian Sleeperswere
also affectedby the ActonGrange
work,with the 1M16/20.45 Inverness-
Euston Mk.3 sleepers travelling south
viaChorleytoManch ester and then
southby way of Stockport, Stoke-
on-Trent and Colwich Junction. Nos.
90042/3/7/9were allnoted on this
train at Stokebetween July20and the
