Sio’s second-half hat-trick leaves
weary Wolves chasing shadows
Racing
Kempton still
for sale despite
King George’s
new sponsor
The shadows of Old Traff ord are visible
from the highest vantage points of this
stadium but since the Super League
Grand Final was fi rst staged in Man-
chester, in 1998, any notion of the Red
Devils heading four miles down the
road to compete in the biggest game
of the season have been nothing more
than a pipe dream: until now, one
suspects.
They are unfashionable, they are
unfancied but there is no doubting it
now: Salford are a threat to everyone
in the end-of-season run-in.
They had not won six consecutive
top-fl ight league games for 40 years
before this deserved victory , which
moves them into third. With two
games remaining, the play-off s are
beckoning at long last.
Generations of supporters have
come and gone since their last title
win, in 1976, living in hope rather
than expectation of a side capable
of competing for major honours and
bringing genuine sporting success
back to the city.
“It’s taken a while to get the right
mix here but we’ve some genuine
guys who want to compete,” said their
highly regarded coach, Ian Watson.
They were certainly made to work
hard for it in the fi rst half against a
spirited Warrington side, with Krisnan
Inu’s penalty the only score of the
opening 40 minutes, but fi ve days
after winning the Challenge Cup at
Wembley , it was perhaps understand-
able that Warrington were unable to
replicate their defensive eff orts after
half-time.
Four tries in 14 minutes swung the
contest decisively in Salford’s favour
and from there a jaded, under-strength
Wolves side were never likely to
respond.
“I was really proud,” Steve Price, the
Warrington coach, said. “We rolled our
sleeves up, put the gloves on and went
down swinging.”
While this is six straight wins for
Salford, for the Wolves it was their
sixth consecutive Super League
defeat. Two months ago they were
comfortable in second and play-off
certainties. Now they could end the
weekend level on points with sides
outside the top fi ve.
Nine minutes after half-time their
defensive line was breached for the
fi rst time when Ken Sio pounced on an
error from Tom Lineham to score and
that threatened to open the fl oodgates.
Eight minutes later Sio had his second
following some su perb build-up play
and, despite trailing only 10-0, the
vistors looked in trouble.
It seemed certain Warrington
would make it six consecutive years
that the cup winners have lost their
fi rst league game after Wembley when
Jake Bibby fi nished a wonderful long-
range Salford move on the hour, Inu’s
conversion making it 16-0.
Sio’s hat-trick came three minutes
later, when he seized on a Lineham
kick to race the length of the pitch and
ensur e no way back for Warrington.
To their credit they did battle until
the fi nal hooter, a point underlined
when they concluded scoring with
a minute left with Danny Walker
ensur ing they would at least avoid
the ignominy of fi nishing scoreless.
But this was not about the Wolves.
This was Salford’s night and on this
showing there may be more of these
nights to come over the next few
weeks.

The King George VI Chase at Kempton
Park, the highlight of the Christmas
jumping programme, has a new spon-
sor after Ladbrokes agreed a fi ve-year
deal yesterday to back the track’s two-
day Winter Festival meeting. Hopes
the deal could herald a more certain
future for the course soon evaporated
when the Jockey Club, which owns
Kempton, confi rmed its plans to sell
the track for housing are unchanged.
The King George has been won
by many of the sport’s most famous
names, including Arkle, Desert Orchid,
Wayward Lad and Kauto Star. This
year’s race is the intended target for
Nicky Henderson’s outstanding chaser
Altior, who is unbeaten in 19 starts over
jumps but has yet to race beyond two
and a quarter miles.
Altior is the 7-2 favourite to win on
Boxing Day, when victory in what is
likely to be his fi rst race over three
miles would confi rm his status as
one of jumping’s all-time greats. He
could yet prove to be one of the last
champions to line up for a King George
at Kempton as the result of a plan
announced in January 2017 to sell the
course to Redrow Homes, which plans
to build up to 3,000 houses on the site.
The likelihood that Kempton
would be closed appeared to recede
in March 2018 when an assessment of
Spelthorne council’s green belt land
found Kempton was “strongly per-
forming” in fulfi lling the purposes
of the green belt. Simon Bazalgette,
who was widely seen as the architect
of the scheme in his role as the Jockey
Club’s chief executive, also stepped
down earlier this year.
Unless or until it is formally killed
off , the scheme to develop the land –
which is valued at £600m – will remain
in the planning process.
Ladbrokes confi rmed it has signed
a deal to sponsor the Winter Festival
“wherever it takes place”, while Katie
Maier, a spokesperson for the Jockey
Club, said there is “no update of any
kind with regard [to] development at
Kempton Park ”.
