Barista Premium
Instant Roast &
Ground Coffee (100g),
£1.99, Lidl
Price per cup: 3.9p
VERDICT: Very fine
powder rather than
granules that makes a
smooth brew and tasted
just as good, if not
better than Nescafé.
Score: 10/10
Alcafé Gold Roast
(200g), £1.89, Aldi
Price per cup: 1.8p
VERDICT: Dried
granules looked and
smelt exactly the same
as the big brand. Decent
strength with a
reasonable caffeine kick
and less than 2p a pop.
Score: 9/10
Tesco Gold Freeze
Dried Coffee (100g),
£1.89
Price per cup: 3.7p

weak, bland and
disappointing. Not
worth the saving.
Score: 2/10
Dark Roast Freeze
Dried Instant Coffee
(100g), £1.75, Sainsbury’s
Price per cup: 3.5p
VERDICT: Made a very
dark drink, but has a
decent coffee flavour.
Difficult to tell the
difference between this
and Nescafé.
Score: 9/10
Extra Special
Colombian Instant
Coffee (100g),
£1.98, Asda
Price per cup: 3.9p
VERDICT: Made a fair
drink that wasn’t bad for
the price but needed a
bit more of a caffeine
kick for our liking.
Score: 6/10
Gold Instant Coffee
(100g), £1.85, Morrisons
Price per cup: 3.7p
VERDICT: Came out a
bit weaker than the
others and we found it
bland as we struggled
to get any hint of coffee
flavour.
Score: 2/10

AS the kids head back to school
next week, many parents will be
back to the nine-to-five grind too.
That means the tea run is back on
and caffeine kicks will be needed to
keep everyone going.
But as we are all a bit skint after the
summer holidays, it could be the
perfect time to ditch those expensive
brands and bag some bargain brews.
We pitched the supermarket own
ranges of instant coffee, coffee pods
and tea bags against the big names
to find out which made the most
refreshing cuppas.

Ristretto Espresso,
intensity 10 (10),
£1.49, Lidl
Price per cup: 14.9p
VERDICT: Smelt very
appealing and had a nice
smooth and creamy
flavour with a decent
caffeine kick. A good
alternative and less than
half the price.
Score: 9/10
Lungo, intensity 4
(10), £1.49, Aldi
Price per cup: 14.9p
VERDICT: Flavour was a
bit bland and not strong
enough for our taste. If
you like a weaker brew,
this may be one for you.

caramel. Gives the brand
a run for its money.

Lungo Coffee Pods,
intensity 5 (10), £2,

VERDICT: Slight
bitter smell and left an
aftertaste. We struggled
to get even a hint of a
coffee flavour.
Score: 2/10
Lungo Coffee Pods,
intensity 6 (10),
£1.69, Asda
Price per cup: 16.9p
VERDICT: We liked the
slightly creamy flavour,
despite tasting it black, as
we did with the others. A
decent caffeine kick.
Score: 9/10
L’OR Espresso
Splendente, intensity 7
(10), £3, Morrisons
Price per cup: 30p
VERDICT: We weren’t
keen on the bitter smell,

tad bitter too. We’d rather
stick with Nespresso for
just an extra 9p per cup.
Score: 4/10
INSTANT COFFEE
