LAZY GROANS
NEWCASTLE v WATFORD
PREMIER LEAGUE
TOMORROW, KO 3PM
BY IAN MURTAGH
JONJO SHELVEY expects to
be left out of the Newcastle
side to face Watford tomorrow
- and he will not blame Steve
Bruce one bit.
If Shelvey, who missed a penalty
in Wednesday night’s EFL Cup
shootout defeat against Leicester,
is omitted again, he knows it will
be because Bruce wants to stick
with the nucleus of the team that
shocked Tottenham last weekend.
There is a perception that for
all his rich talent, Newcastle
function better without Shelvey.
Some even call him lazy.
The 27-year-old refutes that
charge. “I get labelled lazy, maybe
because of my body language and
I’m quite a laid-back character,”
he said. “But you couldn’t call me
lazy against Leicester.
“I’m playing for another
contract at this football club and
I need to keep performing and
training hard.”
Shelvey (right)
accepts he may never
match team-mate
Sean Longstaff ’s
running stats – the
Geordie covered
almost 13K at Spurs,
but insists every
individual should be judged
on his own merits.
“Stats are stats,” he said. “You
can run 15K if you want. Did you
Shelvey: Bruce right to leave me out..
see Gazza running 15K? Do you see
people like that? I’m not comparing
myself, but I understand football is
changing and I am evolving with
it, but I get labelled lazy.
“On that performance the other
night, I’m not, and if that’s what it
takes to get into the team, I’ll do it.”
However much Bruce was
impressed with Shelvey’s industry
against the Foxes, the player is not
expecting to play this weekend.
“The team won at Spurs,” he said.
“If I was a manager, I wouldn’t
change a winning team. That’s
just the way it is, so if I’m on
the bench and am called
upon, I’ll be ready.
“I got dropped last week
and was going to knock on
the gaffer’s door the next day.
“I got the chance against
Leicester, and screwed up with that
penalty miss, but you’ve just got to
keep going.”
1987: Lloyd Honeyghan
knocked out American Gene
Hatcher in just 45 seconds in
Marbella, Spain, to retain his
world welterweight title.
1998: Damon Hill secured the
Jordan team’s maiden Grand
Prix win in the rain at
Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium.
2004: Sir Bobby Robson was
sacked by Newcastle.
2015: Manchester City signed
Wolfsburg attacking midfielder
Kevin De Bruyne for an
estimated fee of £54million.
CHARLIE
NICHOLAS missed a penalty as
Arsenal’s First Division title
charge got off to a shaky start.
Nottingham Forest beat the
Gunners 2-0 with goals from
Johnny Metgod and Peter
Davenport. “I’ve missed two on
the trot – but I’ll still take the
next one,” said Nicholas.
