DIDN'T SEE THESE COMING

If you’re at the newsstand and you read this far, then there’s a
good chance you picked up this magazine to see what the gorgeous
R34 Skyline race car on the cover is all about—and why it’s driving
on the street. It’s a former time-attack car from Japan that’s beaten the
ludicrous fast time of the famous Mine’s GT-R at Tsukuba Circuit.. How
it’s road legal now and cruising the streets of Seattle is beyond me, but
hats off to the original builder ATTKD and its new owner Mark Wang,
who’s brought new life to the car in the Pacific Northwest.
If you just opened your mailbox, then you’re probably curious
about the gray S15 Silvia on the front page. While it might look like a
masterpiece built in Japan, the epic scenery and foreign license plate
will tell you it’s not. In fact, nearly 6,000 miles from it. It’s a unique build
by an unlikely man from the small island of Scotland, and it features
some very highly sought-after goodies any Nissan fanatic would sell

his left nut for. In addition, it’s also rockin’ a V-8 swap, which might be
customary in our neck of the woods, but in the U.K., it’s simply unheard
of and we commend owner Martin Oberheim for that.
What I really wanted to point out in this month’s issue are a few
rather unpredictable features. When I originally set out to design this
month’s cover, I’d placed a truck, van, and hatchback together dead
center on the page. It was a wild thought and would’ve been a bold
move, but my superiors brought me back to my place and asked me,
“WTF are you doing?” Maybe they’re right and I was starting to fall off
the deep end, but I invite you to take a long look at the Mazda B series,
Toyota HiAce, and Civic hatch this month. While they’re a bit off the wall
and out of this world, they really got my blood pumping to the point
where I was overwhelmed by fascination. I never saw them coming,
and I hope you can appreciate their creativity as much as I do.
