The Hustle
Two con artists, classy British seductress
Josephine Chesterfield (Anne Hathaway) and
abrasive Aussie Penny Rust (Rebel Wilson)
meet up while both journeying to the French
Riviera in search of wealthy men to defraud.
Although noticeably different in their
methods, the pair decide to team up in a bid
to swindle young tech billionaire Thomas
Westerburg (Alex Sharp).
FIVE FACTS:
- The Hustle is a remake of a remake, as it
was conceived as a female-centric version of
1988’s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which was
itself based on 1964’s Bedtime Story. - During production, the film had the
working title Nasty Women, a reference to
Donald Trump branding Hillary Clinton a
“nasty woman” during the run-up to the
2016 presidential election. - The movie is directed by the British actor
and comedian Chris Addison, marking his
big-screen directorial debut. - Hathaway’s role is analogous to Michael
Caine’s in Dirty Rotten Scroundels; these two
thespians had previously acted together in
the Christopher Nolan films The Dark Knight
Rises and Interstellar. - The Hustle has been mauled by critics,
who suggested that it added little more than
a feminine twist to a familiar formula.
