Rocketman
This biopic chronicles the formative years
and musical breakthrough of rock superstar
Elton John, here played as a young man by
Taron Egerton. At the Royal Academy of
Music, John forms a musical partnership
with songwriter Bernie Taupin (Jamie
Bell), but proceeds to suffer crushing lows
between the musical hits that Taupin helps
him to achieve.
FIVE FACTS:
- The film was first announced in 2013, when
Michael Gracey and Tom Hardy were lined up
to respectively direct and star, while Focus
Features was to be the film’s distributor. - However, Gracey and Hardy ran into
creative differences with Focus and John,
leading the director and star to leave the
project, which subsequently languished for
years before Paramount Pictures took up the
distributing reins in April 2018. - At that time, Egerton was cast as
John while Dexter Fletcher became the
new director. - The real Elton John was an executive
producer on this film, while his husband
David Furnish was a producer due to the
involvement of Rocket Pictures, the film
company he runs with John. - The film has attracted much praise from
critics, with the lead performance and
musical numbers especially hailed.
