LHO opens 1♦, and partner doubles. What
action would you take on each of these hands,
after next hand passes?
A REMInDER first, that partner’s double means
that he is either too strong to make a simple over-
call, or he wants to compete, but doesn’t know
which suit to bid.
In the latter case, you can be certain that he has
good support for both majors; so, your task is to
judge whether or not your hand is good enough to
encourage partner.
These are all straightforward decisions. Bid 2♠ on
(a) and 3♣ on (d), both invitational with 9HCPs and
seven losers. You have no interest on (b) unless
partner is very strong, when he will bid again, so you
bid 1♥ (your lower major).
Hand (c) has the same distribution as (b) but it is
strong enough to make an invitational bid; you can
invite partner to choose his preferred major by mak-
ing a cue bid of 2♦. If he responds 2♥ or 2♠, you’d
pass, but if he makes a jump response of 3♥ or 3♠,
you are just good enough to raise to game.
