A redesigned BMW Z4 roadster returns after a three-year hia-
tus with a soft top, up-to-date advanced safety features, and
improved fuel economy. The base 2.0-liter turbo Z4 delivers punchy
acceleration and an invigorating exhaust sound. An eight-speed
automatic is the only transmission offered. Handling is super nimble
but the stiff ride is unyielding. The soft top can open and close in
just at 11 seconds and do so even on the move up to 31 mph, which is
a big convenience. The iDrive control system has a learning curve,
but proves logical after some familiarity. Apple CarPlay compatibil-
ity helps. All Z4s are equipped with forward collision warning with
pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and lane depar-

BMW X7
BMW’s new super-luxurious three-row SUV has a standard turbo
six-cylinder engine and smooth eight-speed automatic transmis-
sion. This is a gem of a powertrain that provides punchy acceleration
and respectable fuel economy. Its comfortable ride is helped by the
X7’s air suspension which keeps the body composed; the handling is
remarkably responsive for such a large SUV. The cabin is incredibly
quiet and has a richly furnished interior. Buyers can choose between
two second-row captain’s chairs or a three-person bench seat. BMW’s
latest iDrive infotainment system is easier to use than in previous
versions, but it still takes some getting used to. Standard advanced
safety features include forward collision warning, city-speed auto-
matic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, and
