The 100-Word
History of a Cult
Classic
In 1982, Henson
and Oz’s The
Dark Crystal
wasn’t a massive
hit with critics or
audiences—
many families
found it not
friendly at all—
but Henson con
sidered it his
most personal
film, and over
time it summoned
a devoted
follow ing fueled
by home
entertainment
releases, con
vention appear

collectors’
merchandise
(including, for
some reason, a
line of perfumes).
The Jim Henson
Company spent
years develop
ing a movie
sequel prior to
the deal for the
prequel series,
which CEO Lisa
Henson hopes
will last multiple
seasons and
calls “the thing
I’m most proud
of that we’ve
done” since her
father’s death.
