SEVEN GREAT
CANADIAN
MARATHONS
Planning your Boston qualifier or a
maybe a runcation? From prestigious
to charming, there’s a Canadian
marathon waiting for you.
By Alex Cyr
When fabled Greek messenger Pheidippides ran some 42 kilometres
from Marat hon to At hens to announce Greece’s milit ar y victor y over
Persia, moments before dying in the arms of his people, he likely had
no intention of becoming a trendsetter. Yet, nearly 2,500 years later,
here we are. To run a marathon has become a rite of passage, a badge
of honour, a formidable challenge recognized beyond the world of
running. The world ’s most distinguished race distance has become
as mythical as the story from which it was born.
Marathoning now entices Canadians across the country, from
record breakers to charity runners and even the odd joggler. And
while we may be drawn to the challenge for different reasons, each
reason ought to be celebrated. So, with the help of some of our best
marathoning men and women, Canadian Running tips its hat to
some of the best races over 42 .2k our nation has to offer across seven
distinct categories.
