Recipe for a Cure
“The goal is to make every
cancer patient a survivor,”
benefit founder and co-
chair Sherry Lansing (2)
told THR at the American
Cancer Institute’s Cal
Spirit 34, held at Sony
Pictures Studios with THR
and Billboard among its
media sponsors. Dozens
of L.A. restaurants — from
Wolfgang Puck to BOA —
served bites to the crowd,
as Patrick Dempsey (1)
was celebrated for helping
cancer patients through
his two Dempsey Centers,
which treat 2,500 people
every year. — ALEX CRAMER

Brit Wits
BAFTA and the British
Consul General hosted
al fresco alongside Netflix
to celebrate Black Mirror:
Bandersnatch co-creator
Annabel Jones (7) and
the interactive film’s two
Emmy noms. “You have
to cede control because
you can no longer dictate
or determine — it’s not a
linear narrative,” Jones
told THR of the challenges
of creating a film where the
viewer could choose his or
her path forward. — A.C.

Live History
A packed Montalbán
theater received a rivet-
ing history lesson — of
sorts. Derek Waters and
an all-star cast including
Colin Hanks (14), Seth
Rogen (12) and Evan
Rachel Wood (14) per-
formed a live reading of the
Emmy-nominated Drunk
History episode “Are You
Afraid of the Drunk?” —
centered on Frankenstein
author Mary Shelley. “Of all
the seasons,” Waters said
of the noms, “this is the one
where we have our best
chance.” — RYAN PARKER

Slam Dunk Benefit
“I can’t come up with a
cure, but I can do my part,”
said NBA star Jordan
Bell (15), host of the
inaugural Race to Erase MS
benefit basketball game.
Lonzo Ball (17) and JaVale
McGee were among the
pros courtside at California
State University Long
Beach, alongside the Davis
family (16), founders of
Race to Erase MS. — A.C.
