A tale of the sea to be

experienced on the wrist

The Aquaracer collection draws its
inspiration from sailing and aquatic sports

On Monday 18 September 1967, Intrepid won
the America’s cup in Newport, Rhode Island,
beating the Australian team of Damie Pattie.
This was an important date not only for sail-
ing history but also for watchmaking: the crew
skippered by Emil “Bus” Mosbacher Jr, had
each been provided with a Heuer timepiece –
a Heuer Aquastar Regate to be precise. These
turned out to be crucial instruments during the
race. This was the first time a watchmaker was
involved in such a high level sailing competition,
the culmination of a journey that had begun
in 1895 when Heuer patented the first water-
proof pocket watch case. Sports, in particular
motorsport and sailing, have represented an ex-
traordinary laboratory for the watchmaker from
Saint-Imier-to research and develop increasingly

reliable and precise solutions. At the end of the
1950s, long before the success of Intrepid, the
watchmaker presented the Yacht Timer that can
be defined as the antecedent of the modern
regatta watch. Able to withstand depths of up
to 60m, the ref.33.512 was developed with the
help of America’s leading skippers, an example
of the Heuer’s unorthodox approach that has
been the cornerstone of its success. Innovation
is also at the heart of the Aquaracer collection.
Appearing for the first time in 2003 the range
took some time to win over aquatic sports en-
thusiasts. In 2016 the Aquaracer introduced some
new aspects: the diameter of the case increased
from 41mm to 43mm and the ceramic bezel was
restyled. Another new feature was the magnify-
ing glass over the date, which is located towards
the 3 o’clock mark. The anti-reflection sapphire
crystal protects a blue and black dial. Water re-
sistant to 300m, the Aquaracer is powered by the
celebrated Calibre 5 mechanism. The timepiece
can be matched with a satin-finished polished
steel bracelet. In short, it’s the perfect watch for
wearing and for experiencing the sea and sailing
without having to compromise.
