A leap into the future
of watchmaking
Garmin’s MARQ Captain is a genuine
navigational instrument which follows
the new path of smartwatches
How far can we push the boundaries of inno-
vation? The new MARQ range of watches from
Garmin offers more than one answer. Indeed,
to put it bluntly, this collection redefines the
concept of the smartwatch by raising the bar
even higher. It comes in five versions – Aviator,
Athlete, Driver, Captain, and Expedition – and
is designed to offer maximum performance in
any situation. Specifically, the MARQ Captain
is for people who want to enjoy an active life
at sea, enabling them, as it does, to manage a
series of operations from their wrist.
They include: setting the autopilot, activating
the alarm, should the anchor come loose; re-
ceiving information regarding depth, interfac-
ing with the chart plotter and displaying the
vessel’s data in real time, displaying informa-
tion regarding the tides, plotting the course
and calculating the intensity and direction of
the wind. But that’s not all. There’s also the
MOB function which can detect the exact po-
sition, in the event of “man overboard”. It’s an
amazing concentration of technology housed
in a grade 2 titanium case with a 46mm diam-
eter, while the thickness is 14.7mm.
The total weight of 88 grams, if you include
the nylon strap with Jaquard motifs. The strap
is seamless, and was produced specifically for
Garmin by a company in the south of France.
Its dense weave was finished with a technical
laser that ensures robustness even if comes
into constant contact with salt water. In terms
of materials, the use of ceramic for the bezel,
which in the case of the Captain model is an el-
egant blue, also stands out. The information is
displayed on a 30.4mm diameter screen which
has a resolution of 240 x 240 pixels. It’s pro-
tected by a convex sapphire crystal lens which
was assembled by hand. The lithium-ion bat-
tery can last for up to 12 days in smartwatch
mode, up to 28 hours in GPS mode and up to
48 hours in UltraTrac mode. It is waterproof at
up to 100 metres.
