CHOP, CHOP A wave of models traded long layers
and lobs for pretty pixies this season. “It’s a power move,”
says hairstylist Teddi Cranford, who cuts hair for models
in New York City. “It’s great when you’re at a point in your
life where you’re feeling cool and confident—you want to
make a statement.” Eugene Souleiman styled faux crops at
XXL HAIR Afro curls, retro wigs, and disco-inspired
volume confirmed the motto for the season: Bigger is
absolutely better. At Michael Kors, stylist Orlando Pita created
mini waves with lots of body by wrapping hair in one-inch
sections around the arms of U-shaped hairpins, figure eight–
style. He clamped a flatiron over each pin to set the waves
before unraveling them and brushing out the hair. To make it
Thom Browne for a look he describes as “the gentlewoman.”
For a boyish yet polished effect, he created a deep side
part and blow-dried hair with a vented brush for lift at
the crown. To hide the hair’s length, he braided it down
the back. “A lot of women are wearing their hair shorter.
It’s very liberating and feels fresher,” Souleiman says.
modern, Pita kept the top of the hair flat. “Waves today don’t
start at the root,” he says. “That was more the feel in the ’70s.
This is something that can be worn now.” Stylist Gary Gill
opted for a crimped effect at 3.1 Phillip Lim. He divided dry
hair into eight sections and applied mousse before braiding
it tightly and briefly blow-drying it. He then used a flatiron
on the crown to seal in the style before brushing it all out.
