HIGH SCHOOLS
There are many sports ex-
periences 17-year-old girls’
volleyball standout Allison
Jacobs of West Ranch has en-
joyed growing up in the Santa
Clarita Valley. All pale in com-
parison to representing the
United States last year during
an international competition
in Honduras.
“It’s really a surreal experi-
ence,” she said. “I can’t even
describe it. Literally nobody
else gets to do it. During the
national anthem before the
first game, I’m saying, ‘Holy
cow, I’m really doing this. This
isn’t club ball. This is for
America.’ ”
Jacobs, who has commit-
ted to UCLA, is leaving next
month in the middle of the
school year to play for the
USA Youth National team in
the 2019 FIVB Girls’ U18 World
Championships in Cairo.
She’s a 5-foot-11 senior outside
hitter with tremendous pass-
ing skills and the ability to fin-
ish at the net. Her enthusiasm
to compete rubs off on team-
mates. Her days as a soccer
player prepared her for the
transition to volleyball.
“Soccer was my favorite
sport, all-time,” she said.
She dropped soccer after
her freshman year because
her volleyball potential was
coming through each time she
stepped onto the court in club
matches.
“At first, I was successful
because of coordination, but
it only gets you so far,” said
Jacobs, who began playing
volleyball in fifth grade. “Once
I got into club, I started devel-
oping technique and every-
thing clicked.”
Former Dodgers manager
Tommy Lasorda says he
“bleeds Dodger blue.” In simi-
lar fashion, the Jacobs family
“bleeds UCLA blue and gold.”
Allison’s father, Brian, was
an All-American offensive
lineman at Newhall Hart be-
fore going to UCLA in 1988.
Her mother, Tricia, played
softball, basketball and vol-
leyball in high school in Sacra-
mento and is the sister of for-
mer UCLA pitcher Dave Zan-
canaro, a 1990 first-round
draft pick of the Oakland Ath-
letics. Mom and dad met at
UCLA when they were living
in the same apartment build-
ing and have been married for
23 years.
Allison’s sister, Katie, who
was a volleyball standout at
West Ranch, played for UCLA
in 2017 as a freshman and is
now focusing on academics.
Allison will be playing for
UCLA next year. And there’s a
third Jacobs sibling, Jack,
who’s a 6-foot-5 freshman
quarterback at La Canada St.
Francis.
“I told him, ‘Dude, you bet-
ter go to UCLA,’ ” Allison said.
“He can go anywhere else, but
I want him to finish out the
Bruin line.”
Allison has never received
a grade other than A on her re-
port card. All the children are
A students and have been
sports fanatics from birth.
“There’s always a ball
bouncing in my house,” Brian
said.
In the family garage, Brian
posts signs for the kids to read
and remember.
“I CAN OUTWORK ANY-
ONE. School. Sports. Life.”
“THE PAIN OF DISCI-
PLINE versus THE PAIN OF
REGRET.”
“UCLA BRUINS PARK-
ING ONLY.”
“It’s funny looking back on
my pictures,” Allison said. “Al-
most every picture, I’m in our
cul-de-sac riding a bike or
playing some sport. We al-
ways went to UCLA football
games and tailgated. My mom
coached me in AYSO. It was
chaotic but worth it.”
Jacobs should be among
the top volleyball players in
Southern California this sea-
son. The other Southland
player joining her in Egypt on
the USA team is Kami Miner,
ajunior at Redondo Union.
Santa Ana Mater Dei projects
as the No. 1 girls’ team, led by
setter Mia Tuaniga, who has
committed to Long Beach
State. Los Angeles Mary-
mount and Redondo figure to
challenge the Monarchs.
Jacobs intends to keep en-
joying the family sports expe-
riences, though there’s one
she has yet to accept — catch-
ing a pass from brother Jack.
“Oh, no,” she said. “Thank
goodness. I hear he throws it
so hard.”

No. 2-ranked Bellflower
St. John Bosco opened its
football season on Saturday
night at home on national
television against Hyatts-
ville (Md.) DeMatha. The
Braves should be grateful
senior receiver Logan Loya
went from Orange Lutheran
to St. John Bosco in the off-
season.
With the passing attack
struggling, Loya was the
bright spot in the first half.
He caught six passes for 98
yards and quickly became
the go-to possession re-
ceiver for Clemson-bound
quarterback DJ Uiagalelei.
The Braves, after leading
21-7 at halftime, came away
with a 35-7 victory.
St. John Bosco had trou-
ble running the ball, and
that affected the passing at-
tack. Uiagalelei completed 1 1
of 28 attempts in the first
half for 210 yards and two
touchdowns.
Kris Hutson had a 56-
yard touchdown reception
and Beaux Collins caught a
seven-yard touchdown pass.
The Braves’ defense was
outstanding, led by safety
JonJon Vaughns and tackle
Jairus Satele. Hutson fin-
ished with five receptions for
139 yards.
Loya had nine catches for
162 yards. Uiagalelei was 17 of
37 for 322 yards and two
touchdowns.
Big openers
All-City defensive end
Anthony Ruvalcaba of
Garfield picked up where he
left off last season, recording
five sacks in his team’s 27-6
win over Montebello on Fri-
day night. He had 18 sacks in
2 018.
Mission Viejo opened its
season in Hawaii with a 38-14
win over Konawaena.
Quarterback Peter Costelli
passed for 162 yards and one
touchdown and also scored
on a 42-yard run, showing off
his 10.8 100-meter speed.
In Rancho Cucamonga’s
50-31 win over Eastvale
Roosevelt, quarterback CJ
Stroud passed for 381 yards
and five touchdowns.
Sophomore Eddie Allain
of Riverside Norte Vista
rushed for 247 yards in 40
carries and scored two
touchdowns in a 28-14 win
over Menifee Paloma Valley.
In Camarillo’s 56-7 win
over Lakewood, quarter-
back James McNamara was
12 of 16 passing for 214 yards
and four touchdowns.
In Reseda Cleveland’s 28-
25 win over Palisades, run-
ning backs Kariem Muham-
mad and Caleb McCarty
rushed for 141 and 188 yards,
respectively.
In Norco’s 52-27 win over
Arizona Williams, quarter-
back Shane Illingworth
passed for 476 yards and sev-
en touchdowns.
He can take a hit
Brandon Vazquez, a 5-
foot-9, 170-pound junior for
La Habra, took the handoff
on Thursday night against
Upland and knew immedi-
ately what was about to hap-
pen when he saw the line-
backer wearing No. 10 in the
spot he was headed for. And
it wasn’t just any linebacker
— it was Justin Flowe, who
has made a reputation for vi-
olent tackles.
“I felt like a rag doll,”
Vazquez said in describing
how Flowe lifted him up as if
he were making a pro
wrestling move before drop-
ping him to the ground. “I
didn’t have anywhere to go. I
saw him do it to other peo-
ple. I got hand-cleaned and
push-pressed.”
Flowe was given a 15-yard
penalty for unnecessary
roughness, and Upland was
given another 15-yard penal-
ty to improve La Habra’s
field position and enable the
Highlanders to win 21-14.
Vazquez caught two touch-
down passes but knew what
he was going to be remem-
bered for in that game.
“He’s a freak of nature,”
Vazquez said of Flowe.
