that category and this will matter a bit when on longer journeys. After-market
options would be advisable if listening to your favourite tunes while travelling.
The Harrier does throw in its fair share of tricks, too, an example being its
automated windscreen wipers that burst into action at the slightest hint of
water. The Creta, then again, has those automated seat adjustment controls
which are missing in the other two. Hence, they all have their own quirks and
it is down to the buyer as to what they could live with and without. All three
cars have their display controls on the steering wheel which, again, are easy to
use. A sunroof is seen in all three as well and they have a host of warning
indicators for everything under the sun, especially in the Harrier.
PRICE AND VERDICT
For most people out there, the Hyundai Creta is the clear-cut winner with
its price-tag of Rs 15.64 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top-spec 1.6 SX(O) that
we drove. However, the diesel choices start from Rs 10 lakh for the 1.4-litre
and Rs 13.35 lakh for the 1.6, both ex-showroom. The Creta will comfortably
handle all that the regular buyer would throw at it. Its driveability on the
road and interior ergos are all one would really need, to be honest.
The Tata Harrier is an interesting release by the Indian giant and offers
a more spacious cabin, a futuristic design, and a host of features. The
Harrier starts at Rs 13 lakh for the XE variant; we
drove the XZ variant which could be yours for Rs
16.56 lakh. However, if you need a four-wheel-drive
vehicle, the Jeep Compass is really your only option in
the segment. In addition, the Compass we drove, the
2.0D Limited(O) 4x4, with that better music system
and power output costs more than the other two at Rs
21.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The price of the base two-
wheel-drive Jeep Compass 2.0D starts from Rs 16.61
lakh (ex-showroom).
The bottom-line in picking your new car from among
these three would depend entirely on your use and what
you expect from your compact crossover.
There is another thing, though, and that has to do
with the newly launched MG Hector and the
upcoming Kia Seltos. These new cars will drop right
into this segment and are packed with enough
technology to rival the International Space Station. At
this time, the Indian buyer surely is spoilt for choice
here and no one is complaining.
