ThenewHondae is a compact
electriccarthataddressesthegrowing

HyUNDAIHAVEDEVELOPEDACTIVESHIFT
Control(ASC), a new gear-shifttechnology
said to improvefuel efficiencyand the joy of
driving.ASCis setformassproductionand
willfeatureinfuturehybridmodelsfrom
Hyundaiand Kia, with the new Sonata
Hybridbeing the first to receiveit.
ASC optimizestransmissionefficiencyby
monitoringthegear-shifts 500 timesper
secondandadjustingthetransmission
rotationspeedforfastershifttimes.It
appliesnewcontrollogicsoftwaretothe
HybridControlUnit (HCU),which,in turn,
controlstheelectricmotortoalignthe
rotationspeedsoftheengineandthe
transmission.The resultsare 30 per cent
lowershifttimes,smoothershifts,and
improvedtransmissiondurabilitywith
minimizedfriction.
Hyundaihavealsorevealedtheirworld-
first CVVD or
ContinuouslyVariable
ValveDuration
technologythatcontrols
timingofvalveopening
andclosingaccordingto
drivingconditions.Set
formassproduction,it
increasesperformance
byfourpercentand
fuel efficiencyby five

percentanddecreasesemissionsby 12 per
cent. CVVD optimizesboth engine
performanceand fuel efficiencywhile also
beingeco-friendly.Typicalvariablevalve
controltechnologiesmanagethetimingof
thevalve’sopeningandclosingorcontrol
thevolumeofairadmittedbyadjustingthe
depthoftheopening,butcouldnotregulate
valveduration,asthevalve’sclosingtiming
wassubordinatetoopeningtimingand
couldnotrespondtodiversedriving
situations.CVVD takes the technologyin a
newdirectionbyadjustinghowlonga valve
is open.
CVVD will makesits début in the all-new
SmartstreamG1.6 T-GDi engine,a V4 turbo-
petrolthat makes180 hp and 265 Nm of
peak torque.

driving.Thesystem
improvesfuel efficiency
and reducesCO2
emissionwhilealso
preventingbattery
