There are a good number of 1:16 radio controlled tanks in circulation these days and while the standard
kit parts are adequate for most modellers, there’s nothing like that extra touch of refinement. Aber have
produced a set of beautiful turned brass smoke dischargers that replace the moulded plastic kit parts and
they look fantastic. A sheet of photo-etched brass provides the fittings for the ignition cabling brackets at
the rear of each cylinder and copper wire is included for the cables themselves.

AN OFFER YOU CAN'T REFUSE..
It all started last November at
an annual model event, during
my participation in the Italeri
competition. A mutual friend,
Andrea Barlotti, introduced me
to Mauro Malservisi, a member
of the Italeri board and we
immediately started talking about
our common passion for model
making, competition vehicles,
motorcycles and cars. At some
point during the conversation
came a question that I wasn’t
expecting; “would you like to
assemble the prototype of an
upcoming F1 model?” One does not
refuse such an offer! The subject
was the Renault RE23 Turbo, a
Formula 1 car of my youth. That
time in Formula 1, the big car
brands descended on the track
to challenge themselves and the
turbo era began. Italeri's 1:12 kit
is of excellent workmanship finely
printed in all its parts and is an
excellent base for the insatiable to
create a hyper detailed model.
The only obligations were to
make the model 'straight-from-
the-box' to illustrate the contents
of the kit without any additional
detail work, correcting only any
defects in the joints and all the
time, working closely with the
designer and his workshop staff.
Thanks to the excellent work
done during the design phase, no
corrections were necessary.
Once the parts that make up the
kit have been removed from their
sprues they only require a careful
clean-up to remove the burrs,
levelling the mating edges with
400-grit abrasive paper and then
finishing with 1000-grit. Following
the instruction diagrams, I started
with the assembly of the front
axle by coupling the two parts
that make up the chassis, after
first painting them. At the time,
the chassis were monocoques in
aluminium, so everything should

Almost the whole car has been dry-fitted here, pre-glue and pre-paint. A wise idea to confirm that
everything sits together perfectly
