A Milwaukee Road freight rolls
west through Jefferson Canyon
near Jefferson Island, Mont., on
July 8, 1979. Today, much of
MILW’s famed Pacific Extension
is abandoned, but large portions
still serve as recreation trails.

The joint Union Pacific and Mil-
waukee Road station agent at
Marengo, Wash., 59 miles east of
Othello, hoops up orders to the
conductor of an eastbound Mil-
waukee freight on July 25, 1974.

Bjorklund used a crossing signal to frame the power, including a “Little Joe” electric, of a Milwaukee
Road freight heading east at Loweth, Mont., on July 23, 1973. His eye for composition elevates his
photography beyond a basic historic record of place and time.
