Exporters weigh

on FTSE 100 as

sterling buoyed

by Brexit talks

THE pound soared to its
highest levels in three
weeks yesterday, as
investors seized on hopes of
a Brexit deal.
Sterling saw gains of
around 1pc against the euro
and dollar, after German
chancellor Angela Merkel
and French president
Emmanuel Macron both
suggested a deal could be
reached before a deadline
on Oct 31.
Boris Johnson, the Prime
Minister, met with the two
leaders as part of an effort to
find alternatives to the
controversial Irish backstop
mechanism that proved a
sticking point during
negotiations and votes over
the existing Withdrawal
Agreement.
The exporter-heavy FTSE
100 , which benefits from a
weak pound as many of its
constituents operate
overseas, suffered from
sterling’s rise. After a poor
start to the day, it was
caught by a combination of
poor US purchasing
managers’ index data and
currency pressure to close
down 75.79 points at 7,128.18.
NMC Health was the
blue-chip index’s biggest
climber, closing up 360p at
£22.96. The Abu Dhabi-
based healthcare provider
beat expectations, and was
bolstered strongly by a
Reuters report that said
funds had expressed an
interest in taking a stake in
its operations.
At the other end of the

index, luxury goods retailer
Burberry did poorly amid
continued exposure to
disruption in Hong Kong,
down 82p to £21.22.
Elsewhere, Mecca Bingo
owner Rank Group led
risers on the FTSE 250,
after posting a revenue
increase and discussing its
web pivot.
The group has
accelerated its push into
online gaming in a bid to
revive its fortunes as the
popularity of bingo
continues to wane.
Like-for-like revenues
from Mecca fell 2pc as the
number of customer visits
fell by 9pc for the year to
June 30.
Rank’s total revenue rose
0.6pc to £695m despite an
11pc surge in digital
revenues, but pre-tax
profits slid by just over a
quarter to £34.6m.
Chief executive John
O’Reilly said the group’s
performance in the second
half of the year was pleasing
“given the challenges we
faced in the first half ”.
Shares rose 17.6p to
169.8p, but are at about half
the level they were trading
at in early 2016.
Ferrexpo was the biggest
mid-cap faller as it suffered
from exposure to a rapidly
sinking iron ore price. The
miner fell 13.2p to 202.6p.
Tumultuous summer
markets have played havoc
with commodity prices,
pushing gold up to recent
highs and knocking oil
down. Iron has been one of
the biggest victims. After
soaring earlier this year
amid a drop in supply, it has
had a major fall from grace
as the global manufacturing
slowdown cuts into demand.

Rentokil-Mitie

deal signed off
The Competition and
Markets Authority has
given the green light for
FTSE 100 giant Rentokil to
acquire parts of Mitie’s pest
control arm for £40m in
cash. The deal was
accepted providing it sells a
majority to ServiceMaster.
The watchdog warned in
April that the deal could
lead to higher prices for
customers.

Antofagasta lifted

by copper sales
Copper miner Antofagasta
has revealed healthy profits
despite worries over the
US-China trade war. The
Chilean miner posted a
22pc rise in copper
production to 387,300
tonnes and a 44pc increase
in earnings before interest,
tax, depreciation and
amortisation to $1.3bn
(£1.06bn) for the first six
months of the year.

Retail sales in

August collapse
Retail sales in the UK fell at
their fastest rate in August
since 2008 as sentiment
among retailers also
slumped to a post-financial
crisis low, according to a
Confederation of British
Industry (CBI) survey. A
total of 58pc of retailers
who responded to the
survey said sales had fallen

  • the second-weakest
    reading since 1983.

Premier Oil

profits bubble up
Premier Oil managed to
turn a profit in the first half
of the year as sales grew
almost 40pc to $871m
(£717m). The FTSE 250
company reported a
half-year pre-tax profit of
$119m against a $25m loss
in the same period last year.
But an asset sell-off still is
on the cards as it seeks to
bring its more than $2bn
debt under control.

Links of London

looking for buyer
British jewellery chain
Links of London is racing
to find a buyer as its owner,
Folli Follie, seeks to finalise
offers by next week. It was
“almost inevitable” that a
sale would take place
through a pre-pack
administration, according
to Sky News. In April, Folli
Follie was exploring a
potential sale, working
with advisers at Deloitte.

Eurozone confidence dwindling

By Tom Rees

THE eurozone economy
struggled in August as the
global economic malaise
sent confidence tumbling to
its lowest level in six years.
It suffered one of its weak-
est readings in the purchas-

ing managers’ index since
the sovereign debt crisis –
with business optimism
down from 58.8 in July to
55.5 – as industrial output
fell for a seventh month.
Composite PMI inched up to
51.8, from 51.5, as Germany
neared a technical recession.
