THE COBBLESTONES

When Marston’s Brewery rolled out

their two-for-one chain, the bean

counters decided it suited March

and hence we have Cobblestones,

a busy, modern and cheerful pub

on the outskirts of town. It has a

fantastic array of burgers among its

20 or 30 main course choices.

Two steaks and a bottle of wine

for £20 on Thursdays and Fridays is

exceptional value – but for obvious

reasons the pub is not ideal for

single diners.

THE CROWN LODGE

Moving up the scale takes me on

occasions to the Crown Lodge at

Outwell, Wisbech. My most recent

meal was homemade lasagne

served up in an eye-wateringly

large and appropriate dish with a

beautifully dressed side salad, to

which I added a basket of chips

and mayo, unfazed by the £

price tag. The service is excellent,

the ambience a pure joy. It could

be Valentine’s every day here.

GURKHA SPICE

My third favourite, Gurkha Spice

in March, is a recent addition to

the town. It took over an Indian

restaurant that was once popular

but lost its way – and its customers.

Gurkha Spice in Dartford Road

has brought its customers back with

a twist that, as its name implies,

introduces Nepalese dishes.

Dumplings served with hot and

spicy sesame seed chutney and

the spicy lamb kidneys are two

unusual starters but forever in my

must-have list when I eat there.
