Surrounded by the wonders of
Hawaii Island, the Mauna Kea
Beach Hotel is inspired by a
canvas of white-sand beaches
and art from around the world.
Conservationist and venture
capitalist Laurance S. Rockefeller
built his resort—Hawaii Island’s
first—in the 1960s, effectively
capturing the spirit and beauty
of Kauna‘oa Bay. The hotel has
evolved over the years, even
receiving historic hotel status,
but it still retains the tony beach-
house feel Rockefeller envisioned
where every hallway features a
special—or surprising—work of art.
On Saturday mornings at 10
a.m., join a guided tour that brings
the walls—and secret nooks—to
life through stories about the
individual pieces, architecture,

and history of the hotel. An
expansive reflection of the Pacific
Rim region, the collection spans
from a Maori canoe prow to
intricately woven attushi coats
made by the indigenous Ainu
people of northern Japan. One of
the collection’s most artistically
treasured pieces (though not
the most valuable) is a 12th-
century pink granite Buddha
figure, which stands five feet
and three inches tall.
Fittingly though, much of the
art comes from Hawaii, including
traditional quilts, kapa textiles,
and kii wooden images. The hotel’s
interior design also captures the
essence of the islands, from lanai-
style balconies overlooking the
ocean or golf course to picture-
perfect views of the bay.
