Edwards. Hearn said:
“When you’ve got 12
screens that we put up
around the thing now,
you can’t ignore it.
“So is it time now for
the British Boxing
Board of Control to
say that, ‘Yes, we
will have the
replay system for
WBC events or do
we just implement it
anyway?’”

ensured he would not get up.
Martinez had his hand raised
and was announced as the new
champion to a chorus of boos
from the O2 crowd, who could
see the replays on the big
screens.
British Boxing Board of
Control rules do not allow
officials to review decisions but
WBC rules do and their
president Mauricio Sulaiman
took matters into his own
hands and declared the fight a
no-contest and the WBC belt

Charlie Edwards’ WBC
flyweight defence against Julio
Cesar Martinez ended in
controversy.
Edwards thought he had lost
the title when he was counted
out in the third round by
referee Mark Lyson. But the
official somehow missed
Martinez firing in a body shot
when the Surrey man was
already on the canvas.
Edwards had taken a knee to
recover from an earlier heavy
blow but the illegal shot

Wales’ Six Nations
Grand Slam this year

  • has missed out with
    Gatland worried about
    his ability to stay fit
    over the course of a
    long tournament.
    Resolving his other
    selection dilemma,
    Gatland opted for Rhys
    Patchell over Jarrod
    Evans as fly-half cover
    for Dan Biggar.
    Wales have
    gone for a split
    of 18 forwards
    and 13 backs
    and Gatland
    believes they
    have all the
    qualities of a
    side capable of
    winning the
    World Cup. “We’re not
    hiding away from the
    expectation. We’re not
    afraid of playing
    anyone,” said the Kiwi,
    who will leave his role
    after the tournament.
    “You need a bit of
    luck, but you also need
    a bit of confidence and
    self-belief and I think
    we’ve got that. We’ve
    put in some good
    performances and had
    some positive results
    in the last 18 months.
    “We’re a team that
    doesn’t give up.”

WARREN GATLAND
admits he has taken
a huge World Cup
gamble on Rhys Carre
after the Saracens prop
continued his meteoric
rise by making Wales’
31-man party for
Japan.
Carre has started
just four games in his
professional career and
has only 40 minutes of
experience at Test
level. He was the
surprise name in head
coach Gatland’s squad
announcement
yesterday.
The 21-year-old, who
has lost one-and-a-half
stone in training with
Wales this summer,
got the nod over
big-name casualty
Rob Evans.
Gatland has
rolled the dice
with that
selection
but believes
Carre is worth
the risk.
“Rhys is a
massive call.
He is 128kg
and is a big man, but
he is only going to get
better and better. The
progress he’s made has
been phenomenal,”
Gatland said.
“He is going to make
mistakes but, if a guy
comes in at 138kg and
is really struggling and
is then beating the
other props in terms of
fitness, you have to take
your hat off to him.
“He’s got some
engine on him and
he’s explosive when
he carries the ball.
Sometimes you take
a bit of a risk because
you think someone can
do a job for you when
they’re called upon.
“He might make a
mistake, but sometimes
that risk is worth
looking at. We’re
confident if we
continue to work with

Risky business as

Wales take chance
