InStyle Australia – September 2019

(Ron) #1
Rake a handful of
volumising mousse
through damp hair,
then blow-dry with
a large boar-bristle
brush. To get that
va-va-voom boost
at the roots, “as you
blow-dry, pull the
hair forwards and
over your face,” says
hairstylist Koh, who
styled Valance’s hair
for our shoot. Once
dry, apply texturising
powder to the roots
and muss in with
your fingertips.

FULL
VOLUME
For hair with a
fringe or stubborn
flyaways, smooth a
drop of light-hold gel
through the roots.
Use an oval, cushion
brush to pull hair into
a high ponytail and
secure with an
elastic. Instead of
pulling hair through
to the ends, create a
loop, leaving about
a third of your length
free. Wrap the
elastic around the
loop again to secure.

LOOPED
TOPKNOT
This style is best
suited for gritty,
second-day hair.
If your strands are
on the oily side,
spritz first with
dry shampoo. Spray
hair all over with a
texturising mist and
scrunch in with your
hands. Wrap random
sections of hair
around the barrel
of a curling wand,
finishing an inch or
two from the ends to
elongate the wave.
When cool, comb
fingers through to
loosen the bends.

RETRO
SHAG
Texture and body will
help to disguise
imperfections when
attempting a tricky
updo. Tease the front
section of hair with a
comb and set with
hairspray. To do a
French twist, gather
lengths into a
ponytail at the nape
of your neck. Grab
the base of the
ponytail and twist in
a clockwise motion,
directing the hair
upwards. Tuck ends
into the tunnel
created by the twist
and secure with pins.
Finish the look with
on-trend clips.

UNDONE
UPDO
Begin with freshly
washed and dried
hair. Apply a
heat-protecting
serum to midlengths,
then, using a hot
curling tool, curl
small segments
away from your face.
Once the hair is
curled and cooled,
run a paddle brush
through to
deconstruct the
curls, then flip hair
over to one side.
Spritz midlengths
with a texturising
spray for an
effortless and
undone result.

TOUSLED
TEXTURE
The trick is to create
a wet-look texture
without soaking
your mane. Dampen
hair with a spritz of
water. Squeeze a
light-hold styling
paste into your
palms and, starting
with your hands at
the front of your
head, drag hair back
and away from your
face. Use a comb to
smooth, then secure
into a low ponytail.
Pin down short
strands that
come loose.
