of three parts, each fitting in neatly with its pair
but completely versatile depending on the wearer, the
Fusion ring made waves in 2000 and set off a chain
reaction of customisable jewellery, a trend that’s still going
today. Opting not to work with an outside designer for
the new launch, the brand enlisted its own team to come
up with the final pieces.
“We’ve been trying for a few years to make this
right. Then we got the shape figured out and said, ‘Okay,
it’s perfect.’ Then we got a little excited and that’s why
there’s 19 pieces,” Manville shares, admitting it was
painful having to cull to just 19. The resulting capsule is
elegant, edgy and utterly special. From dainty drop-circle
earrings complete with Fusion’s signature wave aesthetic,
to bracelets with smooth, silvered finishings and speckled
with intricately placed diamonds, the collection is a real
ode to that first ring. Plus, with yellow- and rose-gold
tones or the classic Georg Jensen silver, each piece is
completely customisable.
“There’s seven different variations of the bangle and
we’ve tried to capture the best or most popular versions of
the Fusion rings,” Manville notes. “Since 2000, the original
story of the ring almost goes to the side because the customer
is making their own piece—the creativity gets moved to
another direction, so it’s very personal.”
Personal, indeed. From the factory floor—which is more
like a chic, local studio—to the offices upstairs, the Georg
Jensen team really does seem like one big family.
A communal lunch where we dined on traditional
smørrebrød sandwiches in the courtyard confirms it: the
Danish way of life is all about precision, doing things well
and with integrity. Something surely summed up with
the relaunch of Fusion. And, in an age where all the best
new things are old, Georg Jensen has firmly proved it can
pull off a revival. —FRANCESCA WALLACE
