There are 375 team members in product
development across Fisher & Paykel’s two
design centres in Auckland and Dunedin.
The Dunedin Design Centre develops the
cooking and dishwashing products and it’s
here that 150 staff, ranging in experience
levels from more than 40 years, through
to new graduates, use their skills, and their
palates, to bring exciting new technologies
and design into Kiwi kitchens.
What is your background and how did it
lead you to F&P? Tell us about your role.
Lauren Palmer: I studied Industrial Design,
drawn to the combination of art and
engineering. I’ve always loved to cook, so I
can’t think of a better place to be. As part
of my current role as a chief designer, I am
responsible for leading and developing the
team of Dunedin-based industrial designers,
as well as collaborating with the wider team
to deliver design integration throughout our
product development process.
Becky Bax: I have a degree in Food and
Media from the University of Birmingham.
While studying I had the opportunity to
accept two fantastic internships at Good
Housekeeping magazine in London, followed
by one with Jamie Oliver, which led to a
permanent role with Jamie’s food team.
I was part of a small team assisting Jamie
while filming on location, on photoshoots,
recipe testing and product testing. Working
for someone with such knowledge and
genuine passion for food was infectious and
inspiring. I’ve been able to apply so much
of what I learned there to what I do now,
particularly in thinking creatively, having an
eye for detail and thinking about ways to
help people succeed with home cooking.
As a product evaluator, my role is to drive
the performance of our cooking products,
ensuring the end-user gets great results.
How does a love of food help what you do?
L: Our design process revolves around
the customer and food – there is such a
love of food out there at the moment and
people are really getting into cooking as
a creative outlet. We love to build a deep
