gallery come up and say, ‘Hey Kaylene, I love your painting!’ It’s
always hard being away from home and missing friends and family
but I keep busy visiting galleries and I love trying different good
food and shopping for clothes and presents for family. I was really
surprised to win the Sulman Prize last year – it was really special
to be there in Sydney to celebrate and to meet so many other lovely
artists and see their work too. It’s really special to know that my
painting made people smile, laugh and feel happy.
How important is it to paint with your family and community?
Iwantja Arts is a special place with lots of artists sharing a big,
busy studio space and supporting each other. Some of the older
artists who first showed me painting are still working today – they
look at what I’m doing now and say, ‘Kutjupa Way! Wiru!’ (‘Wow,
that’s something different! That’s great!’).
Iwantja Arts is known for its innovation and your work is part
of that legacy. You’ve had great success recently. What’s next?
At the moment I’m working on a collaborative community project,
the ‘Iwantja Arts Young Women’s Film Project’ that will be shown
at Tarnanthi Festival of Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander Art opening in October at the Art Gallery of South
Australia. I’m also very excited to present a very special exhibition
of new work later this year at Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery with my
friend Del Kathryn Barton – I can’t wait to share my latest works
with everyone!
