Local design in South Africa draws inspiration
from colour, art and our collective imagination.
Bold colour and natural earth tones work
together to create exciting and innovative
designs that are unique to our country.
I am inspired by local designers including
Karen Richards from K Interiors. She is
masterful in the way she incorporates colour
into her work. I also admire the work of Donald
Nxumalo. His work is bold, exciting, innovative
and distinctive. He isn’t afraid to experiment
with colour and has the creative vision to
interpret the minds of his clients.
At the moment I am featuring a lot of green
décor elements in my interiors. I love creating
a focal point with green vases in a variety of
shapes. I also feature animal print, black and
white, vintage-themed or African-inspired
artwork on canvases. Chandeliers with a twist
(i.e. made from beads, leather, twigs and other
natural materials) are a fun way to add interest
and drama to your living area.
My favourite ways to transform a house
into a home are by adding unique scatter
cushions to couches – to create a relaxed
and cosy feel, layering a variety of lighting
types (ambient, task and accent lighting), and
incorporating carpets, rugs and wallpaper.
