play in Toronto. When the Raptors
traded for the Spurs’ disgruntled
forward in July 2018, it was widely
suspected he was a year away from
signing with an L.A. team in
free agency. And the Raptors had done
all right without him, leading the
Eastern Conference with 59 regular
season wins in 2017–18.
Still, Toronto president Masai Ujiri
gave up fan favorite DeMar DeRozan,
center Jakob Pöltl, and a first-round
pick for a player who, the season
before, had only played nine games
