WHAT’S

THE CALL?

BAD BOUNCE

Drew Swanson is bowling during a cricket
match. As he attempts to throw the ball toward the
wicket, he grips the ball too tightly and it bounces
several times before rolling. You, the umpire, call a
no-ball. Penelope Paul, the batter, goes ahead
and hits the rolling ball and scores a single
run. Swanson complains that the run
shouldn’t count because you called
no-ball. How is the play scored?

DROPPED POP

In a softball game between the
Lowell Sluggers and the Bristol Krakens,
Sluggers outfielder Val Payton comes to
the plate with a runner on first base. She
attempts to bunt but accidentally pops
the ball in the air. Krakens catcher Selina
Camargo prepares to catch the pop-up in
fair territory. Noticing the runner standing
on first base, however, she
intentionally drops the ball
to initiate a successful
double play. The Sluggers
complain, but
Camargo points
out that with
only one runner
on base, the
infield fly rule
was not in
effect. You’re
the umpire.

STICK IT TO ’EM

The Center City Flyers are playing the Rogersville Rascals in a
hockey game under NHL rules. Rascals winger Alec Gardiner is standing in
front of the Flyers’ net. His teammate, defenseman Tim Ferguson, unleashes
a slapshot from the blue line, which deflects off the shaft of Gardiner’s stick,
sawing it in two. The deflected shot bounces off the Flyers’ goalie, Robbie
Leroux. Gardiner falls to the ice and uses the top half of his broken stick to
sweep the puck past Leroux. The Flyers complain that Gardiner can’t score
with half a stick. You’re the referee. Does the goal count?
