sued over 2018 wildfire

Federal prosecutors filed a lawsuit
against the DURANGO & SILVERTON
NARROW GAUGE RAILROAD, saying one of
its trains started a fire that began June 1,
2018, and burned more than 53,
acres. The suit seeks about $25 million
toward reimbursement of the costs of
fighting the “416 Fire.” The fire, which
closed the railroad for more than a
month, led to D&S plans to introduce
diesel locomotives in periods of high fire
risk and convert at least one locomotive
to burn oil. An attorney for the railroad
declined comment, citing the pending

BOMBARDIER will lay off 550 workers —
half the workforce — from its Thunder
Bay, Ontario, plant in November, citing a
drop in orders and the effects of “Buy
America” provisions on car orders in the
United States. The company said it had
“no choice” but to move some manufac-
turing to the U.S.

A former SOUTHERN PACIFIC three-quar-
ter-length dome car, the Selkirk, entered
service in CANADIAN PACIFIC’S heritage
passenger-car fleet after a year-long
restoration by CP shop forces. The car,
purchased from Colorado’s Royal Gorge
Route, is one of seven domes home-
built by SP in 1954-55, and one of two
still operable. The other is in Panama.

VIRGIN TRAINS USA plans to double the
number of stops on its Miami-West Palm
Beach, Fla., route, telling bondholders in
a monthly update that it would seek to
add stations at Port Miami; Aventura,
Fla.; and Boca Raton, Fla.; and that those
stations “have the potential to generate
in excess of two million additional
annual trips” for the passenger carrier.
