BURGH WATCH

RUGBY
FAN-ZONE BLOG
evens, 10s
and touch
rugby - tartan
or otherwise - all rise to
the fore while away the
summer months when
the full 15-a-side game is
taking a well-deserved
holiday.
As an Edinburgh fan this
particular close season,
lengthened as it is by us
not being involved in the
Guinness PRO14 knockout
stages, and then the
upcoming world cup, is
dragging already.
In these fallow months,
I for one have been
poring over the various
Instagram accounts to
glean every little detail
they can provide, For
example Mark Bennett
posting a picture of the
array of trainers and boots
he is using in pre-season,
hopefully indicating he
is good to go. Videos of
Lewis Carmichael running
at full speed are similarly
encouraging.
There was even a picture
shared by the club of the
kit bags issued to the
team which suggested that
the new shirt will have a
series of dots across it to
complement the blue and
burnt orange.
I also particularly enjoyed
the introductory video
of back row signing
Nick Haining and the
interviewer gently ribbing
Pierre Schoeman therein
for the fact he seems
to take a professional
photographer with him
everywhere he goes.
So, as a fan I’m twiddling
my thumbs but the guys
are already back training
in preparation for the
long season ahead. The
dreaded bronco tests
have been done, weights
are being lifted and the
strength and conditioning
team are probably having
needles stuck in their
effigies of an evening.
In keeping with pre-season
training everywhere the
ball has been rarely, if
at all, in evidence as
everyone is cajoled to
work a bit harder.
It’s also a time when
everything is possible.
The conferences have
been re-shuffled. Leinster,
Ulster and Dragons are
moving to Conference A
whilst Connacht, Munster
and Cardiff Blues have
headed in the other
direction to Conference B
with Edinburgh so we will
get an early opportunity
to avenge the defeat to
the team from Limerick in
last year’s Heineken cup
quarter final.
Conference A looks like
everyone bar Warriors and
Leinster will be competing
for third place at best
whereas Conference B
looks wide open with
perhaps only Southern
Kings unlikely to trouble
the top three places.
You do have to factor in
the impact of the Rugby
World Cup on the teams as
despite the late start to the
league season a number of
games will still crossover
with the tournament in
Japan. Consequently,
fringe and youth players
will play a bigger part than
they would normally at
this stage of the season.
This is an area of concern
for Edinburgh as we
have fallen short in these
circumstances recently.
It will be intriguing to see
whether Cockers has been
able to address this with
recruitment and coaching.
It’s all details. Just bring it.
