Scottish youth rugby looks to be in fine fettle, with the best of the country’s
age-grade talent shining in the U20 1872 Cup and the recent Fosroc Scottish
Academy fixtures

Warriors’ U20 sides met in Gala
for a junior 1872 Cup clash
earlier this month.
The games saw pitted the best from
Edinburgh and the Borders & East Lothian
against those of Glasgow & the West and
Caledonia, with the Capital side emerging
as 23-7 victors in wet conditions.
Although the game was hampered by the
conditions with both sides guilty of more
handling errors than they would have
liked, tries from fullback Callum Pate,
winger Scott Robertson, and scrum-half
Kyle McGhie, as well as penalty a piece
from McGhie and Paul Cunningham, saw
Edinburgh over the line.
Similarly, Caledonia, Glasgow & the West,
the Borders & East Lothian, and Edinburgh
all faced off against each other at U16
and U18 level across four action-packed
weeks.
Caledonia started strong in the opening
weekend as they posted some impressive
high-scores against Glasgow and the
West at both age-grades. The U18s ran in
72 points to Caledonia’s 12 and the U16s
shut-out their opponents, 40-0.
Later that week, the Borders & East
Lothian dominated Edinburgh as both
of their sides romped to comfortable
victories. The U16s saw off their
opponents 24-5 while the U18s won
comfortably 33-17 win.
The week after saw a more mixed bag of
results with a win for each side. Glasgow
& the West U18s were defensively
resolute as they overcame Edinburgh 26-
0, but the fortunes were reversed at U16
level, with Edinburgh holding downing
their opposition 29-0.
Caledonia U18s continued their positive
start against the Borders & East Lothian in
a seven-try 50-12 win, while the Borders
& East Lothian took revenge on their
Caledonia counterparts with a 49-7 victory
that extended their win-streak from the
previous week.
In the final week of the round-robin
fixtures, Caledonia U18s and Borders
& East Lothian U16s continued their
unbeaten run with wins over Edinburgh
and Glasgow & the West respectively.
Caledonia kept ahead of their opponents
throughout the match to win 26-7, whilst
Borders & East Lothian were scoreless
until half-time, thereafter sparking a
remarkable comeback to emerge 29-19
victors come full-time.
After some late drama and a 38-all
draw with Glasgow & the West U18s,
Borders & East
Lothian advanced
to the final on
points difference.
Elsewhere,
Caledonia U16s
also booked their
place in the final
through a
hard-fought
31-21 win over
Edinburgh.
This meant thatboth the U16 and U18 finals were to be
between Caledonia and Borders & East
Lothian.
Caledonia U18s and Borders & East
Lothian U16s did not let up their
tremendous form, and if there were any
nerves, they didn’t show as both lifted
silverware at the end of the day.
Caledonia U18s led throughout their
match, but it was a much tighter affair
than when the two sides met previously.
The score 12-5 at half-time, Caledonia
continued to widen the gap in the second
half and the match finished 33-17.
In the U16 competition, the unbeaten
Borders & East Lothian team looked the
more confident side in their final, leading
17-7 at the break, and despite a late
challenge from their northern opponents,
they finished in style with the final score
of the game, taking the match 31-19.E
